My mind is my shelter

Every being cries out silently to be read differently.

“All sins are attempts to fill voids.”

“A beautiful woman looking at her image in the mirror may very well believe the image is herself. An ugly woman knows it is not.”

“Love is not consolation. It is light.”

“Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.”

“Humility is the refusal to exist outside God. It is the queen of virtues.”

“Creation is an act of love and it is perpetual.”

“We only possess what we renounce. What we do not renounce escapes from us. In this sense we cannot possess anything whatever unless it passes through God”

“Everything which is grasped by our natural faculties is hypothetical. It is only supernatural love that established anything. Thus we are co-creators.”

“Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.”

“To be rooted is perhaps the most important and least recognized need of the human soul.”

“Human existence is so fragile a thing and exposed to such dangers that I cannot love without trembling.”

“Human beings are so made that the ones who do the crushing feel nothing; it is the person crushed who feels what is happening. Unless one has placed oneself on the side of the oppressed, to feel with them, one cannot understand.”

“Love of God is pure when joy and suffering inspire an equal degree of gratitude.”

“If we go down into ourselves, we find that we possess exactly what we desire.”

“Everything beautiful has a mark of eternity.”

“There is something else which has the power to awaken us to the truth. It is the works of writers of genius. They give us, in the guise of fiction, something equivalent to the actual density of the real, that density which life offers us every day but which we are unable to grasp because we are amusing ourselves with lies.”

“Humility is attentive patience.”

“True definition of science: the study of the beauty of the world.”

“Do not allow yourself to be imprisoned by any affection. Keep your solitude. The day, if it ever comes, when you are given true affection, there will be no opposition between interior solitude and friendship, quite the reverse. It is even by this infallible sigh that you will recognize it.”

“Even if our efforts of attention seem for years to be producing no result, one day a light that is in exact proportion to them will flood the soul.”

“Absolutely unmixed attention is prayer.”

“Compassion directed toward oneself is true humility.”

“In struggling against anguish one never produces serenity; the struggle against anguish only produces new forms of anguish.”

“We must not wish for the disappearance of our troubles but for the grace to transform them.”

“The sea is not less beautiful in our eyes because we know that sometimes ships are wrecked by it.”

“A mind enclosed in language is in prison.”

“Art is the symbol of the two noblest human efforts: to construct and to refrain from destruction.”

““A science which does not bring us nearer to God is worthless. ”

“Sin is not a distance, it is a turning of our gaze in the wrong direction.”

“Two forces rule the universe: light and gravity.”

“To claim that theft or adultery or lying are “evil” simply reflects our degraded idea of good-—that it has something to do with respect for property, respectability, and sincerity. ”

“Evil when we are in its power is not felt as evil but as a necessity, or even a duty. ”

“Men owe us what they imagine they will give us. We must forgive them this debt.”

“To die for God is not a proof of faith in God. To die for an unknown and repulsive convict who is a victim of injustice, that is a proof of faith in God.”

“The social order, though necessary, is essentially evil, whatever it may be.”

“The danger is not that the soul should doubt whether there is any bread, but that, by a lie, it should persuade itself that it is not hungry.”

“The beauty of this world is Christ’s tender smile coming to us through matter.”

“Every being cries out silently to be read differently.”

“The joy of learning is as indispensable in study as breathing is to running.”

“The beautiful is the experimental proof that the incarnation is possible.”

“Beauty captivates the flesh in order to obtain permission to pass right to the soul.”

 Simone Weil
